Transparent, blue and orange silica gel are all high-activity adsorptive desiccants with silicon dioxide (SiO2·nH2O) as the main component, differing in the addition of color-changing indicators, ingredient formulations and application scenarios.
1. Transparent Silica Gel (Non-indicative)
It appears as colorless or translucent glassy particles (mainly spherical), without any color-changing indicators added. It physically adsorbs moisture through its microporous structure, with almost no change in appearance after moisture absorption (may turn milky white when fully saturated for a long time).
- Composition: Pure fine-pore silica gel, non-toxic, odorless and chemically stable.
- Color Change: No obvious color variation; saturation cannot be judged visually.
- Applications: General moisture-proofing for food, ph-armaceuticals, electronics, leather, etc., and can be in direct contact with food (FDA approved).
- Regeneration: Reusable after drying at 100-120ºC for 1-2 hours.
2. Blue Silica Gel (Cobalt-containing Indicator)
A color-changing indicative silica gel made by adding cobalt ch-loride (CoCl2) as an indicator to transparent silica gel. It is deep blue when dry, and gradually turns purple and then pink when fully saturated with moisture.
- Composition: Silica gel plus about 3‰-5‰ cobalt ch-loride (classified as a suspected carcinogen, restricted in use in the EU and many other regions).
- Color Change: Dry → deep blue; Moisture absorption → purple → pink (saturated).
- Applications: Scenarios requiring visual humidity monitoring such as precision instruments, meters, industrial equipment and containers.
- Regeneration: Restores to blue after drying at 120ºC and can be reused repeatedly.
3. Orange Silica Gel (Cobalt-free Environmentally Friendly Indicator)
An environmentally friendly cobalt-free color-changing silica gel using non-toxic organic dyes such as methyl violet as indicators. It is orange/orange-yellow when dry, and turns green/colorless when fully saturated with moisture.
- Composition: Silica gel plus about 0.9‰ methyl violet, non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and is a replacement for blue silica gel.
- Color Change: Dry → orange; Moisture absorption → yellowish green → green/colorless (saturated).
- Applications: Moisture-proofing scenarios with high safety and environmental protection requirements such as food, ph-armaceuticals, electronics, optical equipment and art crafts.
- Regeneration: Restores to orange after drying at 100-120ºC and can be recycled.
