Filter material has so many different shapes, but the main filter functions are same. All has physical filter and biochemical filter, but filtering effect will differ due to the different shape.

Filtering ring: When water go through the filtering rings, they will go through the center pores with high flow speed, so that the useful bacteria have enough place for breeding. In this case the biochemical filtering effect is good, but the physical filtering effect is inferior by comparison.
Filtering ball: The filtering ball is with high density. When water go through filtering materials are more evenly distributed. So the physical filtering effect are good, but the efficiency of favorable bacteria's breeding is not as good as filtering rings.
Please clean the filter by water before filling materials in the filter groove. Different filter materials can be placed as single layer or mixed together.
